# Pinterest Widget Not Working — iPhone, iPad & Android

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The Pinterest home screen widget is one of its least reliable features.** Blank widgets, frozen images, and "can't choose a board" are all common. Nearly all of them come down to four causes — here's how to work through them.
{% endhint %}

> 🎉 **Trusted by 40,000+ Pinterest users worldwide** — widget problems are a recurring complaint.

## 🔄 Fix 1 — Force the Widget to Rebuild

A blank widget usually means the app hasn't handed it fresh content. Rebuilding the widget forces that.

### iPhone / iPad

1. **Long-press** the widget → **Remove Widget**
2. **Open the Pinterest app** and leave it open for \~30 seconds
3. Force close Pinterest (swipe up and dismiss)
4. **Re-add the widget**: long-press the home screen → **+** → search Pinterest → pick a size → **Add Widget**

### Android

1. **Long-press** the widget → drag to **Remove**
2. Open the Pinterest app briefly
3. Long-press an empty area of the home screen → **Widgets** → find Pinterest → drag it back

> 💡 The order matters. Opening the app **between** removing and re-adding is what refreshes the data the widget reads.

## 🔒 Fix 2 — Can't Select a Board

A very common iOS complaint: the widget edit screen won't let you pick a board, or resets to a default.

### Try in order

1. **Long-press the widget → Edit Widget** and try selecting again
2. If the board list is empty, **open the app first** — the widget can only offer boards it has cached
3. **Make sure the board is yours and not secret** — secret boards often can't be selected
4. **Remove and re-add** the widget (see [Fix 1](#fix-1-force-the-widget-to-rebuild)) — this rebuilds the config
5. **Update the app** — board selection bugs are common and get patched

### If it still won't hold your choice

Add the widget in a **different size**. The small, medium, and large widgets are separate implementations, and one often works when another doesn't.

## 🧊 Fix 3 — Widget Never Updates

Widgets don't refresh on demand — the operating system decides when they're allowed to, and it aggressively limits this to save battery.

### Requirements for refreshing

| Setting | Where | Why it matters |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| 🔋 **Low Power Mode off** | iOS: Settings → Battery | Low Power Mode suspends widget refreshes |
| 🔄 **Background App Refresh on** | iOS: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Pinterest | Without it, widgets go stale |
| 🔋 **Battery optimisation off** | Android: Settings → Apps → Pinterest → Battery → Unrestricted | Aggressive optimisation freezes widgets |
| 📶 **Data access allowed** | Both | Widgets need network access to fetch images |

> ⏰ **Set expectations:** even when everything is configured correctly, widgets typically refresh on a timescale of hours, not minutes. A widget that changes a few times a day is working normally.

## ❌ Fix 4 — Widget Not in the List

If Pinterest doesn't appear in your widget picker at all:

1. **Update the Pinterest app** — widgets require a recent version
2. **Update your OS** — iOS 14+ / Android 12+ for modern widgets
3. **Open the app at least once** after installing — apps often don't register widgets until first launch
4. **Restart your device** — this rebuilds the system widget index
5. **Reinstall Pinterest** as a last resort

### Android launcher note

Some third-party launchers handle widgets differently. If Pinterest's widget is missing on a custom launcher, test on your device's default launcher to confirm whether it's a launcher issue rather than a Pinterest one.

## 💥 Fix 5 — Widget Won't Open Pinterest

Tapping does nothing, or opens the app to the wrong place.

1. **Force close Pinterest completely**, then tap the widget again
2. **Restart the device** — deep links break after some app updates
3. **Remove and re-add** the widget
4. If tapping opens the app but not the pin, that's a **known deep-link limitation** rather than something you can configure

## 📊 Widget Reliability by Platform

| Platform | Reliability | Notes |
| -------------------------------- | ----------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| 📱 **iPhone (recent iOS)** | 🟡 Moderate | Board selection is the weak spot |
| 📲 **iPad** | 🟡 Moderate | Larger widgets are more prone to blanking |
| 🤖 **Android (stock launcher)** | 🟢 Better | Fewer configuration bugs |
| 🤖 **Android (custom launcher)** | 🟠 Varies | Depends heavily on the launcher |
| 💻 **Mac desktop widgets** | 🟠 Limited | Depends on iPhone widget syncing |

## 🖥️ Want Pinterest on Your Desktop Instead?

If you're using widgets mainly to keep Pinterest visible while you work, a browser-based setup is far more reliable than a mobile widget:

| Goal | Better approach |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 🖼️ Keep inspiration visible | Pin a Pinterest tab in your browser |
| 🌙 Make it easy on the eyes | [Pinterest dark mode with PinDark](/pinterest-troubleshooting/pinterest-dark-mode.md) |
| 📌 Track specific boards | [Sort and monitor boards](/pinterest-growth-and-analytics/how-to-sort-pinterest-pins-by-saves-date-and-popularity.md) |
| 💾 Keep images permanently | [Download them locally](/download-guides-by-content-type/how-to-download-pinterest-images.md) |

> 💡 A downloaded folder of vetted images set as a wallpaper slideshow is more dependable than any widget — and it doesn't go blank.

## ❓ FAQs

**Q: Why is my Pinterest widget not working on iPhone?** A: Usually a stale widget cache. Remove it, open the Pinterest app for about 30 seconds, force close it, then re-add the widget. Also confirm Background App Refresh is on for Pinterest.

**Q: Why won't the Pinterest widget let me choose a board?** A: The widget can only list boards the app has cached, so open Pinterest first. If it still won't hold your selection, remove and re-add the widget, or try a different widget size.

**Q: Why does my Pinterest widget stay blank?** A: The app hasn't supplied content to it. Rebuild the widget and check that Low Power Mode (iOS) or battery optimisation (Android) isn't suspending refreshes.

**Q: How often does the Pinterest widget update?** A: The operating system controls this, not Pinterest. Expect updates on a timescale of hours. Several refreshes a day is normal behaviour.

**Q: Why did my Pinterest widget stop working after an update?** A: App updates can break widget deep links and configuration. Remove the widget, restart your device, and re-add it.

**Q: Is there a Pinterest widget for Android?** A: Yes. Long-press an empty home screen area → **Widgets** → find Pinterest. It's generally more reliable on stock launchers than custom ones.

**Q: Can I put a Pinterest widget on my Mac?** A: macOS can display iPhone widgets when your devices are linked, so Pinterest widget availability there depends on the iPhone widget working first.

**Q: Why does tapping my Pinterest widget do nothing?** A: A broken deep link. Force close Pinterest, restart the device, and re-add the widget.
